Redwoods National & State Parks Plus A Great Wildlife Viewing Day - California
What a great day we had. We visited a couple of state parks, did a scenic drive, had some nice ocean views, saw a bunch of elk and a few seals, and got a great look at one of our favorite birds - the American Dipper, a little gray songbird that is as comfortable in the water as out.
Introduction to Redwood Country & Whale Sighting - Redwoods National Park - California
Today we got up close and personal with the tallest trees on earth in the Redwood National & State Parks. Until you stand next to a Redwood, you have no idea what a big tree is. As a bonus, we spotted some whales at an overlook near the end of today's drive.
Up in northern Maine, or what they call "down east", away from the more touristy area of the Maine coastline, we enjoyed a great day of hiking and beautiful scenery followed by a couple fresh Maine lobsters for dinner.
The waterfalls at Old Man's Gorge here in Hocking Hills State Park were all dry a few days ago when we hiked through. But we had a storm last night, and I was hoping to get some photos with water flowing over the three waterfalls before we left that afternoon. I got lucky and there was at least a moderate amount of water in the pretty waterfall settings.

On this day we visited three of the Hocking Hills area natural attractions. It was a bit more crowded on the trails than we like, but the features themselves were better than we expected.
We had never heard of the Hocking Hills area in Ohio, but we took a look at it after receiving a tip. It turned out to be a quite interesting natural area. This was our first day of hiking from our campground at the Hocking Hills State Park.

Today, we returned to the sites of some great memories from last year so we could share these special places with Linda's sister, Karen, and her husband, Jay. We did get some different photos this time around, so it might be worth checking out this post even if you read the ones from April 2008.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Texas panhandle southeast of Amarillo is one of the top Texas state parks we've visited. We spent a few days there, and this hike to one of the park's best known landmarks is detailed below.
