Day 26 - Rainy Day Move From Lower Sabie Camp to Pretoriouskop Camp

10/9/2011

We woke up this morning to a lot of rain. But we had to check out by 10:00 a.m. as our time at Lower Sabie was over.

Not far out of camp, two large male lions were walking the road coming right at us. They were really close as they passed by my window in the van. In fact, they were so close, I pulled my camera in and closed the window.

We were disappointed that the photos didn't come out very well. Those lions were on a mission, and Tony was backing up to stay alongside them. With the lions and the van moving, I apparently couldn't get stabilized enough for better pics. Still it was a thrill to be so close to those majestic cats.

The only other significant sighting before breakfast was this Kudu bull.

After breakfast at the Nkuhlu Picnic Site, we continued on. On this cool, rainy day, the wildlife viewing wasn't great, but we covered a lot of ground and still saw quite a few animals (See sightings list at the bottom of the page).

We made a stop at the Albasini Ruins on the western side of the park.

The ruins are the "remains of the 19th century trading post of the famous Portuguese trader, Joao Albasini". The ruins aren't much to look at, but it's a special place for Tony. Tony's last name is Albasini, and the historic figure Joao was Tony's great grandfather.

Leaving the ruins, we found a Giraffe lying down - hadn't seen that yet.

We checked into our bungalows at the Pretoriouskop Camp. Our accommodations were once again different than our friends', but this time our bungalow was, surprisingly, nicer than theirs. It was easily the best room we had at any of the camps.

With the lousy weather, we decided to forgo an afternoon game drive. So we relaxed in our bungalows until it was time for our group Happy Hour and preparation of our dinner on the braai.

Tomorrow is our last full day in Kruger National Park. It's hard to believe we've been here three weeks, but as I mentioned before, we were not ready to leave just yet. It's been an incredible experience.
